Features

ARTIST NOTES: GOSSAMER is an impasto painting in mixed media on stretched canvas featuring an expressionistic depiction of a tulle ballet tutu. The artwork is an experiment in various painterly effects, with a blend of abstraction and figuration. It features layers of paint built up to create a heavily textured base, which offsets the translucent white garment floating over the top. Showing through the layers is a rich, tactile, mottled red and purple background.

ARTIST BIO

Eva Horvath is an artist, designer and art instructor with over 30 years experience in the arts.

Having studied Fine Art & Design at Monash University (Caulfield Campus) Eva went on to complete a Diploma of Education at Melbourne University in 1978.

Art study tours in Europe, Japan and USA ensued through the 1980's, that preceded a decade spent working as managing director and artist in residence at Quasi Modo Gallery, Brighton.
Through the 1990's, extensive training in archival picture framing was followed by a managerial position at Vic Ave Framing in Albert Park until 1998, when Eva went on to establish Articall Art and Framing Consultancy in Bayside Melbourne.

An art gallery and studios were opened soon after in Brighton where, in her role as owner/manager, Eva provided custom framing and decorating services, art classes and exhibitions for the next 16 years.

In 2014 Eva decided to focus on developing her art practice full time whereby Articall transitioned from the Bayside retail precinct to operate solely as an on-line gallery.

Since 2015 Eva has taken part in exhibitions at Studio Gallery Melbourne, Brunswick Street Gallery, Without Pier Gallery, the Linden Gallery Postcard Show and ALA Melbourne Gallery.

Eva’s broad body of work encompasses large interiors, urban landscapes, and a variety of abstract paintings in oils and mixed media on linen.
Whether working on representational subjects, or more free-form non-figurative imagery, an abstract sensibility and experimentation with painterliness is usually at the core of every painting.

Over the years Eva’s approach has evolved from painting hard-edge flat areas of colour in acrylic paint, to a more painterly form of expression using oil paints together with charcoal, pencils, and pastels. Indelible images observed in the urban and natural environment are often captured and interpreted on canvas. Impressions of moody, colourful, changing sky views and a play of shadows and light on the landscape may be found in a number of urban landscapes and seascapes. Eva predominantly works on large canvases because the format allows for a broad ‘arm action’ mode of painting that is often combined with more delicate and detailed mark-making applied with a finer touch.

The principle behind all of Eva’s artwork is to interpret themes of interest in a variety of ways, while achieving aesthetic balance and harmony.
